“Little Flames” Notebooks

12 unique art objects by Sophie Teh

“I grew up in Malaysia surrounded by symbols from the Taoist, Buddhist; and Hindu religions. A common one was fire. Flames and the act of burning is linked to purification and transformation.

I created the 'Little Flames' notebooks while I was working on a series of paintings called "My Body Is A Temple, But Not In That Way”.

The series is inspired by my childhood memories of religious artworks and rituals I saw in the temples I visited. I focused on the connection between symmetry and power, and the notebooks are a small part of this bigger body of work.”

Art that can wander around the city

Unlike a painting you hang on the wall, you can take these art objects anywhere you go. Use it to jot something down at a cafe, take it to the beach or bring it to your favorite coworking space.

About the artist

Sophie Teh is an artist interested in depicting familiar forms in unusual ways. In her paintings, recognisable objects and patterns are manipulated to explore how cultural conditioning and personal memories influence how we perceive and react to visual stimuli. Sophie’s work contains references from her earlier career in architecture and her South-East Asian Chinese background.
